Choosing a Fishing Rod

When it comes to choosing a fishing rod, you must first think about what kind of fishing you are going to be doing. If you are primarily going to be fishing in saltwater, then you will want to make sure that you get a rod and reel for saltwater, if you are careless and just pick up a rod and reel made for freshwater, after awhile the rod and reel will start to rust and corrode. The best way for a beginner to start off is to purchase a rod and reel combo, the reason for this is that they are probably well balanced, and more than likely they have the fishing line already on the spool. Rods are mainly made out of graphite and fiberglass, and some are a combination of the two together. The graphite rods are usually more costly than a rod made out of fiberglass of the same quality. It really all comes down to the feel of the rod, once you find out what works best for you, stick with it. Weight is another big factor when it comes to picking out a fishing rod. There are ones that are light and ones that are heavy, basically in the range of lightest, light, medium, medium heavy, and heavy. You will not need a heavy rod unless you are planning to be deep sea fishing a lot, catching 50 pound fish and up. Light to medium rods will suffice for almost any type of fishing under that.

Saltwater Fishing Tip

It is good practice to clean your fishing rods and reels after every time you use them in saltwater. This isn’t that hard to do, and all you really need is access to a water hose, not saltwater though! When you are cleaning your rods and reels make sure that you soak them down with fresh water from top to bottom, get all of the fishing line and all of the fishing tackle, if you do this after every time you fish in saltwater, you will greatly extend the life of your fishing tackle.
